Difference between wait time and delivery time

When you create an automated messaging campaign, you'll be asked to configure two times for each campaign: wait time and delivery time

Let's understand what each of these times really mean, and how they impact message delivery:

  • Wait time: This is the time period for which the message will wait, after the trigger condition has been met. This can be useful in scenarios, where you don't want to send the message instantly on satisfying the trigger condition.

For example, let's say you want to configure an online free bootcamp on your website, and you don't want to ruin the training experience by delivering the workout programs instantly on signup.

In that case, you can configure the wait time as 30 minutes - 1 hour and set the trigger condition as "0 days after account creation". In this scenario, the workout program will be delivered after the 30 minutes wait time, and not immediately on satisfying the trigger condition.

  • Delivery time: Unlike wait time, delivery time is actually a time-specific condition, which needs to be satisfied for the message to be successfully sent to clients. It can be used for scenarios, where you want to send messages at exactly the same time, every day.

For example, let's say you want to send a message to your clients every morning, giving them diet and workout tips. In this scenario, you can configure the delivery time as 8:00 AM, and the message will be automatically delivered at that time (as per client's time zone).
Note: It's important to understand that wait time and delivery time are part of the same pipeline, and when you configure both of them, they will cumulatively generate a time-delay for the message delivery.

For example, if you setup an auto-messaging campaign with the following conditions:

Wait-time: 30 mins
Delivery time: 8:00 AM

Now, in this current workflow, if a client signs up at 7:45 AM and you have a trigger on client signup, they'll actually miss the trigger condition of 8:00 AM, as the system will wait for 30 minutes, before checking the delivery time condition. However, if a client signed up on or before 7:00 AM, they would receive the message at exactly 8:00 AM (as configured).

👉🏻 Pro-tip: We recommend using wait times in scenarios, where you don't want to show your clients that the response is automatically generated, like signup or workout feedback. Delivery times should be used in scenarios, where you want to deliver workout plans or send follow-up messages at the same time, everyday.
